Organic Onion Harvest

Savoury and pungent, a staple of so many dishes, unique in flavour and available all year round. Our tear inducing friend, the onion, has been cultivated for over 5000 years.

The unsung culinary heroes don't just animate food, they're a powerful superfood and once you appreciate their health benefits, it's difficult to do without them.

Onions provide plenty of vitamins, including calcium, potassium, vitamin C and folate while containing no cholesterol, zero fat and typically have less than 1g of sodium.

The compounds found in onions that promote health are separated by cell walls, much like those found in garlic. When onions are sliced, these cell walls are ruptured and the combination of these compounds produces a new compound, thiopropanal sulfoxide. Apart from mitigating diseases this substance is what makes us cry when we cut onions. The anti-cancer benefits in onions is believed to be derived from the sulphur compounds known as allyl sulfides, while the immune boosting properties come from a flavonoid, quercetin.

The Drift has been harvesting our crop of organic onions since mid-December. A period of cooler weather leading up to Christmas was like fairy dust for our pungent friends and we've managed three huge deliveries to our biggest buyer and there's more to come from our fields of organic onions.
